Ailsa Craig

I saw Ailsa Craig as a high court judge
Presiding o'er an ancient grudge,
A long standing feud no rhyme or reason
Some say based in highland treason.

I saw the salt black rocks as twelve men true;
Those misty isles had come to view
The not yet condemned but in the dock,
A solitary seagull upon a rock.

I heard the wind in its haunting voice,
Speak of highland men who made lowland choice
Loyalty pledged then forsaken,
Highland hearts all but breaking.

I saw a single primrose on a ledge,
It seemed to be the futures pledge,
No more fighting much less sorrow,
A brighter day will dawn tomorrow.

Ailsa Craig Island, is ca. one square mile (2.6 square km), off Southwest Scotland, West of Girvan in the Firth of Clyde; it rises to 1,114 ft (340 m). It has granite quarries and a lighthouse and is a sanctuary for sea birds.
